Rally to Support the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act
What: First passed in 1994, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) acknowledged that domestic and sexual violence cause tremdous harm in our society and provided resources to help victims. VAWA created the National Domestic Violence Hotline, funded training for police, prosecutors and court officials, established new federal crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, provided enforcement and recognition of protective orders across jurisdictional lines and enhanced protection for battered immigrants. The VAWA of 2005 must build on these past efforts and increase resources for underserved citizens and target children and youth for services, and engage men as allies in the fight to eliminate violence from our families, workplaces, and schools.
