Spare Time Activity: Wandering around with my camera
Internship: This semester I’m interning at National Geographic Adventure, in New York City. I am officially the ‘Art and Production’ intern (you can even find me in the masthead until the May/June 2010 issue). Since NGA is part of the National Geographic Society, which is a non-profit, the staff here is really small. I have a lot of freedom and a lot of responsibility. I work with Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, Filemaker and the good old internet. My first day here I worked on three layouts and updated the wall. Everyone sits on yoga balls and there’s an electric putting green sitting by my desk. Oh, and we don’t start until 10am (albeit we end at 6pm). I love it.
Favorite Class: My favorite class has got to be Magazine Travel Writing. Taught by a visiting (one block only!) professor, who is the editor-at-large of Outside Magazine, this class was insanely fast-paced. In 3.5 weeks we not only researched, wrote and photographed our own articles, we also produced and published a 50 page glossy magazine. It was super stressful with an oh-so-sweet reward.
Most Memorable Block Break: My best and most favoritest block break was spent tooling around Moab, Utah. We rode the slickrock trail, then blew down the porcupine rim trail and checked out Arches National Monument (utterly stunning). Great friends, good food, superb weather and a campsite 2,000 feet above the valley floor made for an epic block break. Oh, and my legs burned from biking for a week afterwards. Best feeling in the world.
