Favorite class at CC:
Last year I took my first education course,
The Power of the Arts in Education with Kris Stanec, and it revolutionized the way I thought about academic subjects and artistic disciplines together in education. The class discussed how implementing subjects such as music and art can greatly impact students’ learning, and we worked together in groups to bring middle school and elementary school classes to Cornerstone Arts Center for a lesson! It was amazing how uniquely each group’s lesson used the brand-new space (complete with studios, theaters, art galleries, cool tunnels and stairs) to educate visiting students about the arts while learning about the subjects they were currently studying. Everyone in the class also made their own movie about their philosophy about the arts and education, which were absolutely awe-inspiring. I was driven to question everything I had been exposed to in my past education: how it molded my character into what it is today, what experiences stayed with me, and which aspects continue to inspire my learning. I never thought seriously about becoming involved in teaching before this class, and now I’m obsessed with the new prospect of becoming some kind of educator!
Field Study Experience:
I’m currently working with the Americorps VISTA program through the Partnership for Civic Engagement here at CC. Throughout the year, I’m meeting regularly with a group of at-risk students from a local Colorado Springs middle school to construct a Service Learning Project that benefits the community, while providing the students with an experience they can reflect on and learn from. It’s remarkable how perceptive these young students are of issues in their school, their community, and beyond; they just need the resources and support to be the change they would like to see. My group decided to focus on the issue of world hunger for the year, and we are currently researching different organizations to start our project! As for study abroad, I’m currently looking into programs for the fall, and leaning towards a religious studies/Arabic language semester in Amman, Jordan. I became so fascinated by the
Islam course I took Block 1, I’ve been inspired to study in a Muslim country where I can learn more!
Favorite block break experience?
My favorite block break so far has been the first break of the 2009 semester. Four days in Park City, Utah with the women’s rugby team: exploring the Great Salt Lake, hiking the snow-less ski resorts, listening to an absurd amount of techno, and catching up on sleep. Plus, did you know there are bison and antelopes in Utah? I didn’t! There’s nothing more satisfying than working yourself silly during the block, then setting off on an epic road trip an hour after it ends.
Best food on campus?
I am a die-hard Rastall fan. You cannot criticize the dining hall without getting an intensely defensive rant from me about its glorious grub. That being said, my favorite meals from there are probably the build-your-own-curry station, Belgian waffles, anything involving sweet potatoes, and the multitude of breakfast cereals available at all times (Cinnamon toast crunch for dinner? Pardon me?). Other than that, the folks at Colorado College make a wicked good pumpkin soy latte. I am also known to enjoy a trip to Wooglin’s every now and again for a massive chocolate muffin, hummus bagel melt, or overstuffed veggie sandwich.
