About Max '11

Name: Max Pluss
Year: 2011
High School: Kent Denver
Hometown: Denver, CO
Major or intended major:  Spanish / International Political Economy
favorite quote:
“We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake by the infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us in our deepest sleep.” – Thoreau.
campus activities:
Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Team- we train as a team during the off-season and have a busy practice and travel schedule during the spring
I am also heavily involved with the Honor Council specifically working on campus communications
I always find time for IM sports though, no matter what season.
spare time activities:
When the weather is nice, I do a lot of fly fishing.  Being so close to the mountains, it’s easy to access Colorado’s rivers and streams.  In the winter I do a lot of skiing.  Being from Colorado, I have grown accustomed to world-class skiing which I take advantage of when I’m not training or playing lacrosse.
favorite class at CC:
A Spanish course taught in Chile by author and director Antonio Skármeta.  The focus was about Chilean history through literature.  Living in Santiago with a host family and thirty other CC students was a fulfilling intellectual and cultural experience.
favorite CC Professor:
David Torres-Rouff in the history department.  Although his course was outside my major, I enjoyed examining with him race, ethnicity, and immigration in the context of American history and our own lives.   It gave me a unique perspective into the American past and how it intersects with my own life.
internship experience:
Last summer I had an internship with Colorado Senator Ken Salazar.  I worked primarily on Veteran Affairs, Healthcare, and Social Security casework acting as a mediator on behalf of our constituents to various government agencies.
summer job:
I coached the Under 15 Colorado Select Boys Lacrosse Team with my best friend.  We were able to travel to the East Coast with our players and help them make the jump to high school lacrosse.  I also worked closely with the Democratic National Convention Committee before and during the Democratic National Convention in Denver.  We were responsible with convention planning and organizing credentials, transportation, and escorts for elected officials, VIPs, and celebrities.
most memorable block break:
Although this question is rather unfair because every block break has been memorable for different reasons, a few block breaks stick out.  Last block break a few friends and I drove to Montana to fish on a ranch for four days.  Everything from the drive, to the fishing, to the nights hanging out with some of my best friends made it a trip to remember.  Another memorable block break was last year when I flew down to visit a friend from home in New Orleans for a music festival and weekend in New Orleans.  It was a break full of music, culture, and a refreshing change of scenery from Colorado.  Any block break skiing, camping, or just being in Colorado, though, is a block break well spent.
